How to Hire a Voice Actor or voiceover artist

When you set out to hire a voice actor, initially it can seem like an easy venture. After all, you just want someone who sounds good, right?

Like any job, you shop around, you hire the best person for the job and they get it done. But you don’t often have your plumber audition before a job, or have to install that new sink in just a particular way that truly represents your company.

And that’s why it can be so hard to hire a voiceover artist.

From accent, tone to delivery, you need someone that captures the essence of your brand perfectly. And on top of that, you want to hire voice actors who are adaptable and able to give you several reads to refine the performance down to fit your needs.

And, just for your own peace of mind, you want someone who isn’t a nightmare to work with as well!

So - let’s give you a really straightforward look at a few things when it comes to hiring good voiceover artists.

Firstly, where to hire voice actors

Secondly, the actual process for how to hire a voice actor

And finally, how much it’ll cost you.

Where To Hire Voice Actors?

One of the most popular ways to hire a voice artist is through P2P online casting sites. These work like regular job sites, allowing you to post a job listing and receive auditions from a select group of voice artists who are signed up with the site.

This system is simple but it isn’t always a perfect method. You’ll have to pay extra to the site itself in order to host your job and you must to be careful of hidden fees that some of these sites employ, although these can often be avoided by looking into the casting site’s reputation.

One of the most effective methods for finding good talent is often through word of mouth and asking other businesses which VOs they frequently use.

A voice-over isn’t just about the voice. It’s a very relationship-focused process and just because someone has a great voice, does not mean that they are good to work with. It’s always best to ask for recommendations to see if their work style and culture fit your own so the process is easy and fruitful for everyone involved.

How Much To Hire A Voice Actor?

“How much to hire a voice actor?” is a question without a concrete answer.

There are established rates in the voiceover industry but voiceovers will often charge more or less based on their experience, and also the size of the company being advertised can be a factor.

Really it comes down to having an open dialogue when you come to hire a voiceover artist. Get in touch and ask them what their rates are. Voiceover artists are working for themselves, so they’re often able to quote you a personalised package based on what you need.

It’s best to do some light research into the basic rates, but paying more will often get you the best talent and in turn, make sure that the job is done right, and done more efficiently. There’s nothing more damning to your business than a terrible sounding VO and getting it done twice will always cost twice as much as getting it done right the first time.
